• More crash but will there be burn too?

Just a quick post before I head off on a trip.

I’ve been trying to get confirmation of the figures in a report a couple of weeks ago in our local paper,  but not luck so far, so I’ll just stick up the story.

Overall sales of sherry have crashed 9.5% in the 2008-09 season (measured from Sept to Aug). Apparently most of this fall attributable to Germany, which was once the third largest export market and bigger than Spain for volumes. The Dutch are also buying less sherry. The UK is less severe at a 5% fall, but I guess that is relative. There seems to be a bit of uncertainty but it also looks like the falls in volumes have been accompanied by similar falls in value.

Not brilliant news, but then I would have thought wine regions experiencing growth in sales at the moment would be a rarity?

  1. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Justin Roberts, Patrick Carpenter. Patrick Carpenter said: RT @JustinJerez: More crash but will there be burn too?http://tinyurl.com/ykvdkzl<sad when Sherry patently offers best value in whole world> [...]

  2. You’re right – wine sales dropped almost everywhere except the US. Wines sales (volumn) actually increased, the top end of the dollar spectrum wines flattened significantly and there are currently a number of vineyards dumping excess grapes and vintners dumping stock of bottled wines all over.

    I’m taking advantage of it.
